Why GLP-1 Patients Need a Different Kind of Meal Plan
Most diet plans are written for people who are fighting hunger. GLP-1 medications like Semaglutide (Wegovy®, Ozempic®) and Tirzepatide (Zepbound™, Mounjaro®) do the opposite — they slow gastric emptying and quiet appetite signaling, so the problem is usually the reverse: patients do not eat enough of the right things.
That is why the plan below is not about restriction. At Berkley Wellness in Breckenridge, Texas, we build medical weight loss plans around a single question: when your appetite is small, is every bite doing real work for you?
A GLP-1 plan should be protein-dense, easy on digestion, quick to prepare, and repeatable enough that it survives a 12-hour workday. Everything in this seven-day menu was chosen with those four filters in mind.

The Berkley Wellness Meal Plan Rules
Before the menu, six rules that matter more than any specific recipe:
- Eat protein first. Whatever is on the plate, start with the chicken, fish, eggs, or yogurt. If you fill up after four bites, make sure those bites were protein.
- Use smaller, more frequent meals. Three small meals plus one or two snacks beats two large meals your stomach cannot handle.
- Sip fluids all day, not with meals. Large volumes of liquid during a meal crowd out food and worsen fullness. Aim for water between meals.
- Add fiber gradually. Fiber helps with satiety and constipation, but ramping too quickly causes bloating on a GLP-1.
- Keep easy protein snacks within reach. Greek yogurt, cottage cheese, jerky, a shake, hard-boiled eggs, or a protein bar in the truck console.
- Splitting a meal is a strategy, not a failure. Half now, half in three hours is a perfectly good way to hit your targets.
How Much Protein, Fiber, and Water You Need
For most adults on GLP-1 therapy, we target:
- Protein: roughly 0.7–1.0 grams per pound of goal body weight — commonly 100–140 grams per day, spread across 3–5 feedings.
- Fiber: 25–35 grams daily from vegetables, berries, beans, and whole grains, increased slowly.
- Fluids: 64–100 oz of water daily, more in a Texas summer.
- Calories: a modest deficit, not a crash. Rapid loss on a GLP-1 usually means muscle is going with the fat.
If you are unsure where your numbers should sit, we set them for you at your visit. See our pricing page for what a weight-loss program includes.

Grocery List for the Week
Protein: chicken breast, lean ground beef or turkey, salmon, shrimp, sirloin, eggs, Greek yogurt, cottage cheese, string cheese, protein powder, jerky.
Produce: spinach, mixed greens, broccoli, green beans, zucchini, cucumbers, bell peppers, onions, avocado, berries, pineapple, sweet potatoes.
Pantry: quinoa, rice, oats, high-fiber tortillas, white beans, canned tomatoes, hummus, olive oil, chia seeds, walnuts, almonds, taco and Italian seasoning.
What If You Cannot Finish a Meal?
This is the most common question we hear in clinic, and the answer is reassuring: it is expected. GLP-1 medications shrink meal size by design.
Eat the protein first, eat slowly, put the fork down between bites, and refrigerate the rest for later in the day. If you are consistently finishing only a third of a normal plate, stop plating normal portions — build smaller plates that are almost entirely protein and vegetables.
What If You Feel Nauseated?
Mild nausea is the most frequent side effect, especially in the first week after a dose increase. What helps:
- Cooler, blander foods — yogurt, eggs, broth, crackers, chicken and rice
- Smaller portions eaten more often
- Lower-fat and lower-grease choices for a few days
- Water sipped between meals rather than gulped with them
- Ginger or peppermint tea
Persistent vomiting, severe abdominal pain, or inability to keep fluids down is not something to wait out. Contact us — dose timing and titration can almost always be adjusted.
Protecting Muscle While You Lose Fat
Weight loss without resistance training costs you lean tissue, and lean tissue is what keeps your metabolism and your strength intact at 60. Two or three short strength sessions a week — even 25 minutes of squats, presses, rows, and carries — combined with the protein targets above is enough to preserve most of it.
Hormones matter here too. Low testosterone or an unmanaged thyroid makes muscle retention harder. Read more about exercise and hormones, or explore testosterone therapy and BHRT if fatigue and stalled progress travel together for you.
Meal Prep That Survives a Busy West Texas Week
Two hours on Sunday is the whole trick:
- Bake a tray of chicken breasts and a tray of roasted vegetables
- Cook one pot of rice or quinoa
- Hard-boil a dozen eggs
- Portion Greek yogurt and berries into single containers
- Freeze two dinners for the night everything goes sideways
You are not cooking seven unique meals. You are building components you can recombine — which is exactly why this menu repeats ingredients on purpose.
Mistakes That Stall GLP-1 Progress
- Under-eating protein. The single biggest cause of muscle loss, hair shedding, and fatigue on GLP-1s.
- Liquid calories. Sweet tea, sports drinks, and specialty coffees fill the small appetite you have with nothing useful.
- Skipping meals entirely. Appetite suppression is not permission to eat once a day.
- Dehydration. Frequently mistaken for nausea, headache, or fatigue.
- No strength training. See above.
- Quitting during the adjustment week. Most side effects settle within 7–14 days of a dose change.

Frequently Asked Questions
What should I eat on a GLP-1 like Wegovy or Zepbound?
Prioritize lean protein at every meal, add non-starchy vegetables and fiber, and keep portions small. Aim for 100–140 grams of protein daily spread across three small meals and one or two snacks.
How many calories should I eat on a GLP-1 medication?
Most patients do well in a modest deficit of roughly 300–500 calories below maintenance, typically 1,200–1,800 calories per day. Eating far less accelerates muscle loss and side effects.
Why can I only eat a few bites on Semaglutide or Tirzepatide?
GLP-1 medications slow gastric emptying and reduce appetite signaling, so you feel full much sooner. Eat protein first, use smaller plates, and save the remainder for later in the day.
Can I follow this 7-day GLP-1 meal plan if I am not on medication?
Yes. The plan is a protein-forward, fiber-rich template that works for general weight loss, though portion sizes may need to increase if your appetite is normal.
What foods should I avoid on GLP-1 therapy?
Greasy fried food, very large portions, alcohol, carbonated drinks, and high-sugar liquids tend to worsen nausea, reflux, and bloating. Reintroduce them cautiously once your dose is stable.
How do I prevent muscle loss while taking a GLP-1?
Hit your daily protein target, strength train two to three times weekly, avoid crash deficits, and have your hormone levels checked if progress stalls.
